Students at Gozo College Middle School carried out a litter survey during a Nature Walk in one of Gozo’s valleys. The students teamed up in groups and recorded litter found along the valley. Over 30kgs of litter was collected and thanks to their effort the freshwater course was cleaned. The students are putting into action their motto, ‘Never too little to care and do our share’, and the look on their faces says it all!!

Sadly, the sight of a squashed hedgehog is a familiar one. Road signs warning drivers to look out for these spiny creatures have been put up but more need to be added in some areas. Drivers need to pay carefully attention especially when using country roads. As clearly stated by a member of the Hedgehog Preservation Society in Britain, “Hedgehogs don’t have much of a flight defence. They just curl up and wait for the danger to go away but if the danger is a car, their prickles are no defence.”

Malta has a number of development applications for fuel stations on agricultural land which is classified not to be developed. These developments decrease Malta’s significant lack of open space and is contrary to Europe’s goal of placing an end-date to the sale of fossil-fuel cars. The three photographs depict: – a station developed on agricultural land taken through its security fence just prior to opening; – rusting excavation equipment as the development of a station in a rural area ceased some years ago; – fuel pumps on the pavement of a town’s main street seen through a car mirror.

Malta has a number of development applications for fuel stations on agricultural land which is classified not to be developed. The argument for new fuel stations is based upon the ever-increasing number of registered vehicles, Malta having the third highest density of cars in the EU. Fuel station developments decrease Malta’s lack of open space on this small and crowded island. It is contrary to Europe’s goal of placing an end-date to the sale of fossil-fuel cars. Once new land is developed, then it is unlikely to be converted back to its original state for the benefit of all.

An awareness campaign to teach students, parents and teachers about Hazardous Waste Prevention. Examples of alternative natural products instead of chemicals, were promoted. Students reached parents to raise awareness in their homes and then to reach the outer community by also implementing actions at school and outside the school. Throughout the EWWR week we decided to go ‘HAZARDOUS FREE’. We made household cleaning products by using safe and degradable ingredients and used them together at school to show to all students and teachers that there is always a safer way for this. We also went to an old peoples home, talk about hazardous waste, distributed leaflets and explained why we are using our products. This activity is being done to show that hazardous waste is very harmful for our environment and for our health, and how we can avoid it by using safe products as it is very essential
