The iron balustrade at the upper Barrakka Gardens is protecting the visitors of all ages but does not obstruct them from enjoying the magnificent view of the Grand Harbour. Lower down one can view the canon which is also made of cast iron. This canon in the past was used to protect the Maltese from attacks by the enemy. Now this canon is an additional tourist attraction at this site. On the other side of the Harbour however the iron rods of the oil rig is a continuous eye-sore and is causing visual pollution.

The Knights of Malta were really forward looking when they included gardens in their plans of Valletta. These gardens are still popular today for when we visited the Upper Barrakka Gardens we saw people of all age-groups. The pity is that in the rest of the Maltese Islands gardens are fast disappearing as bulldozers move in and high rise buildings are being constructed in their place. We need to realise that gardens are an important source of fresh air of our urban areas and so they should be conserved.

STOP ALIEN INVASION

This is what remains of a large palm tree that provided shade in our school due to the alien species known as the Red Palm Weevil (Il-Bumunqar Ahmar tal-Palm). This pest was introduced in Malta when a large number of palm trees were imported from other countries. Usually, being an island, the water acts as a natural barrier, but this time was not enough to keep these pests at bay. If we had planted indigenous species such as il-Gummara, we would still be able to sit on the bench and enjoy the shade!

World Mental Health Awareness Day is celebrated every year on the 10th October and St. Margaret College Verdala School Queen’s Young Leaders Group assembled with their group founder and teacher, Martin Azzopardi sdc, to raise awareness of what can be done to ensure youths’ mental well-being.

Every year Missio Malta raises a charity fund campaign in aid of a particular mission project in a poor country round the world. This year the charity fund campaign is in aid of Catholic clinics in Uganda so they can be able to buy ambulances to save as many patients as possible especially to treat pregnant women on time. A group of fifth formers at St. Margaret College Senior Secondary School were invited by their teacher Martin Azzopardi sdc to research poverty in Uganda while proposing practical solutions to Missio Malta in aid of this country.

Stormy winds unveil the sea litter at Cospicua Dock

Recently, strong winds hit the Maltese islands and the rough sea unveiled ample litter floating in Cospicua Dock. The floating litter consisted of trash and household toxic substances that are improperly disposed of on land or in water. Water cans, plastic bottles and cups as well as oil cans, spray metal bottles, ropes and other forms of litter have been seen floating at Cospicua Dock. This constitutes an eye sore for passers-by along the Cospicua Dock promenade. Litter which ends up in the sea can travel long distances owing to strong currents and winds. It can directly affect marine life and birds, get caught in fishing nets, damage boat motors and smells bad. Furthermore, plastic bags and plastic wrap can easily be swallowed by fish and birds and suffocate them. After contacting the Cospicua Local Council, the necessary steps were taken to clean up the litter at Cospicua Dock.

This is a photo of a turtle going back to the sea, because it had serious problems in its mouth; it had a hook in its mouth because of sea pollution. Our school took part in this celebration, the representatives where one of the coordinators of the Eco-skola and of the Leaf committee, and the presidents of the Eco-skola and Leaf committee.
