Cigarette butts are a small but overseen harmful type of waste, which litter our streets and end up in waterways. The situation in Malta will be discussed. Initiatives done to address the issue will be investigated. Also, suggestions on what should be done on this issue.

This article will focus on the importance of trees in our life and that of our Mother Earth. It will speak about a project initiated by our school, St.Albert the Great College, to create more green space in Valletta Malta’s capital city. The aim of the project is three fols- to give us students the chance to work hands on with nature,to promote awareness with all our class-mates and to be able to pass a living message to other people to think about and preserve trees. The research and this project enabled our Eko Skola team to understand many important details regarding trees which before were elusive. It also made us appreciate each and every tree we see a bit more as now we see them in a new light.

On a small stretch of the Maltese coastline one unfortunately finds more human influence than natural environment. A case in point is the coastal area of Marsaxlokk Bay which currently harbours the following berthing facilities: Delimara Power Station, Malta Freeport, Oiltanking and others. In this article I analysed the human impact on the Ballut Marshland and the surrounding area done with the construction of the Power Station, the concrete wall face, the road and the breakwater. Thus further development in Marsaxlokk-Delimara will sure leave an impact on the environment.

Water is a scarce commodity in Malta. Rain water should be captured and the best way is to have cisterns in every house in order to collect rain water that falls on the roofs. At the same time, there is less possibility of flooding in our streets.
So limited in space, so high in population

Thus being a source that sustains life on Earth, our planet one must be aware of possible solutions to conserve water, especially in our schools. This article regards the idea of composting green trash in our old towns and villages where typically there is this waste generation with every season. The initiative could be taken by local councils which, at a later stage, could even encourage their residents to consider composting in their own houses in the garden or on the roof as an educational initiative. The compost generated in villages could be used for embellishing roundabouts, local council premises, public gardens, etc., …

These students acted as the “official press” during the event and had even the opportunity to interview Hon. Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change Dr. Leo Brincat.
