This is Luqa Primary’s project for the litterless campaign. It involved active collaboration between our Year 6 classes, the EkoSkola Team the Pupil’s Council, the local Parish and the Luqa Local Council. The objective is to reduce the litter caused by the incorrect disposal of cigarette butts. Throughout this year the children learnt more about the dangers that cigarette butts pose not only to the environment but also to our body. During a clean up activity, we scouted the areas surrounding our school to identify specific places where there was a considerable amount of cigarette butts and we used the allocated funds to buy a number of outdoor ashtrays that will be installed in these designated areas. This will reduce the amount of cigarette butts in the soil and on the pavements. The objective of the video is to raise awareness about this issue with the public .

School committee together with SMT are aware of throwing away used unwanted good clothes & shoes. Sometimes this is done because of the modern society, the need arises to change clothes and style or because we just can’t wear them anymore. Students said that this is generating unnecessary waste as this is being disposed of in their house bins, and they know that clothing can be a large contributor to the destruction of the environment. Therefore, we decided to bring to school, children’s and adults’ used clothes and shoes, which could be easily recycled and reused, given to other children who are less fortunate and to donation centers to have a second life. The aim behind this activity is to learn from a young age how to reduce waste on our throw away culture by recycling and reusing.

On a daily basis, we buy and use various products. But have you ever thought where, by whom, and under what conditions they were produced? Have you ever wondered if your choice is fair with those who produced that product? And how your choice affected the environment? This video about Fair Trade was produced as part of the Young Reporters for the Environment competition 2019 being produced by Marie Therese Pavia and Aidan Gauci (University of Malta, Ġ.F Abela Junior College). It investigates the issue of Fair Trade in Malta so as to raise awareness and knowledge about this subject.
