The alarming rate at which trees are being chopped off to make way for the construction industry prompted the students at Gozo College Middle School to study in detail urban temperatures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trees on urban heat temperatures. Data collected show that surface temperature varies on average by 9°C between vegetated surface and cemented/asphalt surfaces. Results support the statement that lack of trees contribute to the formation of Urban Heat Islands. Having discovered all this the students went a step further. They wanted to be part of the change and not just pointing fingers and complaining about the environmental degradation. Thus, they came up with an innovative idea on how to promote the growth of local indigenous trees

On the 24th of February, mother nature had shown how powerful she could be. Some of the trees that have been embellishing our school for many years were uprooted by the gale force winds that battered the Maltese islands. These trees posed a danger to our students and as a result they were cut down. The trunks will be reused as decorations in our reading garden.

The high ground area at the shoreward end of Delimara Point above il-Hofra z-Zghira in Marsaxlokk has turned into a waste dumping zone. This site has a nice belvedere of Delimara Port and is famous for the polygonal British Fort of Tas-Silg built between 1879 and 1883. Being quite remote, this site is ending up being filled with heavy dump waste including plastic paint containers, paper, broken glass, metal and even remains of construction material. On contacting Marsaxlokk Local Council we were told that heavy dump waste in this area is frequently reported and cleanup actions are continuously taken. Meanwhile, people keep on throwing heavy dump waste especially during sunset when there is no one to report. Then when the wind blows heavily most of this dump waste ends up in the sea port contaminating both water and underwater fish and vegetation. Security cameras are needed to monitor the area.
