RESisles: Resilient Euro-Mediterranean Islands: Democratic Participation for Informed and Responsible Decisions on Climate and the Environment

Euro-Mediterranean islands face economic and social challenges that are related to limited land resources, limited diversification in economic activities, and reduced inhabitant mobility. They are also particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. The EU-funded project RESisles ‘Resilient Euro-Mediterranean Islands: Democratic Participation for Informed and Responsible Decisions on Climate and the Environment’ (Grant Agreement No. 101146782) aims to promote and facilitate civic participation on the islands of Cyprus, Malta and Crete, three of the most populated and vulnerable Mediterranean islands, in democratic processes concerning climate change and the environment. The project will directly involve a diverse range of citizens from different backgrounds and genders, with a focus on vulnerable groups to climate change: youth, women, and those in rural or remote areas.

To this end, RESisles is launching a Video Competition for youth. The competition aims to encourage youth to voice their views regarding climate change, democratic participation and their right to a healthy environment.

Youth between the ages of 9 and 25 are invited to develop and produce a short video in which they express their views about the problem and become agents of change in society – not only as they represent the next generation of consumers and decision-makers but because they are often a source of inspiration and influence in their family and community.

This challenge can be taken by a school, youth association or club, as a curricular or parallel activity within a class and approached from several or multiple disciplines. It promotes critical thinking and active citizenship, regarding a complex problem that is the responsibility of and affects every one of us.
