Lately, I’ve seen a lot of pictures of sea creatures stuck in plastic bags or tied around ropes, turtles eating plastic waste thinking that they are jellyfish, fish washing up on shore, dead with pieces of plastic in their mouths, whales or dolphins caught dead with plastic and ropes tied around their fins. Why is this happening?

The Impact of Surface Material on Temperature Variations

Year 6.1 took part in the GLOBE Program to gather surface temperature data. We used a handheld Helect Infrared Thermometer to record the heat of the surface of 5 different sites within the school. We chose 5 different sites which have different types of surfaces. One site is soil and grass in the shade; one has soil and grass in the sun; one has cement which is in the school yard and one has asphalt which is in the main road in front of our school. We collected data for 5 days for 3 months. We did December, January and February. We took 9 different readings of each site. We wrote all data on a sheet, then we inputted all the data on the GLOBE site. The aim of this research is to understand how different surfaces radiate energy. We discovered that temperature on natural surfaces like soil is cooler, especially with wet grass. The highest temperature we recorded was on asphalt. In the end we wrote this report.

We Are Running Out of Time

On the 31st of January 2023, the Press Kids group together with Ms Charmaine and a few other teachers visited the Farmers’ Market and “Pitkalija” in Ta’ Qali. Sadly, we saw a lot of plastic material everywhere we went. We noticed that most of the vegetables and fruits were being stored in plastic crates. Apart from that, there was a lot of plastic items scattered around the area, including crates, cups, bottles, containers, bags flying in the air, packaging and much more. Recycling is a must, so that nothing goes to waste. Everyone needs to ask, “Is waste really an unwanted, worthless material?” Definitely NOT. So before throwing something away, THINK and see HOW you can reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. The principle of recycling waste is today called the circular economy.

On the 31st January 2023 we went to visit the farmers market, ‘Pitkalija’. We went there to see fresh locally Maltese fruit and vegetables. We want to investigate if local farmers use certified organic practices and if they are support the environment by attempting to minimize waste and pollution. We talked to some farmers and told us about how they take care of their crops. Some uses organic fertilizers to help eliminating the unwanted and harmful contamination. One thing that made us disgusting was how some people throw rubbish like empty plastic bottles on the grass. This can have environmental impact by damaging our soil quality. We were astonished to see a balloon next to the carrots. How come? It was a pity to see these things around the agricultural area. Remember: Don’t forget to bring your own shopping bag to shop local!
