“Globally, the use of energy represents by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. About two thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions are linked to burning fossil fuels for energy to be used for heating, electricity, transport and industry” – With energy being so significantly interwoven with the climate crisis, how is the burning of finite fossil fuels still permissible? What renewable alternatives can countries adopt instead?

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at Xrobb l-Għaġin (XGĦ) Nature Park and GLOBE Malta launched the GLOBE COOLING DOWN Students’ Investigation to collect and share ground surface temperature (ST) data from around the Maltese Islands and hence explore the Urban Heat Islands Effect (UHIE) across the islands. Gozo College Middle School Victoria, St Thomas More College Żejtun Primary School B and ESD at XGĦ collaborated to explore whether location and other factors affect the STs of similar surfaces in three different locations.

Air quality and the level of air pollution are important factors and have significant impacts on the health and wellbeing of humans. Any level of air pollution is not acceptable and poses a risk (World Health Organisation 2021 9789240034228-eng.pdf (who.int)). There are often wide variations in local air quality that go undetected and so we started to investigate the quality of the air around our school. The Gozo College Secondary School is situated in Gozo where there is relatively less traffic than in Malta, but there still is a substantial number per capita. The premises of the school are parallel to a main road and has its frontage overlooking a secondary road which is being increasingly used by traffic as to avoid the main road. Our school collaborated with another school in Malta and with another in Ireland to compare data. Our school used three diffusion tubes to measure the

Climate Change Climate change is a problem worldwide. Unlike the weather, that changes often, it takes thousands or even million of years for climate change to occur. Climate change refers to the long-term changes on Earth. Recently, scientists have observed changes in the amount of rainfall and noticed that Earth’s average temperature has been increasing much more quickly than expected. On average, global air temperatures near Earth’s surface have gone up about 2 degrees Fahrenheit in the past 100 years. In fact, the past five years have been the warmest five years in centuries.

In the article students have also proposed solutions to this problem and backed these solutions by research.

We did some research on flamingos and did some further research about these beautiful birds that we wanted to share with the other children.
