The persistent growth of pollution produced from packaging of materials is a constant threat to our environment. Numerous actions have been taken by governments around the world to reduce pollution. Actually in Malta, producers of packaging are obliged to adhere with the Waste Management Regulations and recover a specified amount of waste and prove that they have met their annual obligations to recover and/or recycle packaging waste (MEPA). Especially since, 37 percent of the 8 percent municipal waste consists of packaging. In 2004, packaging waste represented approximately 3 percent of total waste generated (MEPA, 2006). However, this problem does not concern only industries. In fact, every person in the European Union has thrown out 156kg of waste which was used for packaging in 2010 (Eurostat, 2013). Thus, all of us should make conscious decisions on the choice of products use.

Deforestation-Deforestaction – Planting trees for Peace to show that we care

submitted by St. Francis Primary Cospicua - Malta : The Forest Team  for 7-10

filed under Articles

As responsible students, to show that we care about ‘Deforestation’ which is the removal of a forest or of various trees, we needed to implement actions regarding ‘Deforestaction’. Thus, our school took the opportunity to be involved in the ‘Plant a Tree for Peace’ activity. Being aware of this global problem, students collected money for eight trees to be planted during this event. Besides this, we joined in some workshops were we had the opportunity to learn and enhance our knowledge about different topics such as: the problems pests like the red palm weevil cause to the environment, how our forefathers used the palm leaves to earn a living, various tips on how it is best to grow oak trees and dwarf fan palms from seeds. All these were followed by an explanation about the type of plants that one can find in the community at the nature park.

Responsible Actions for a Better Environment

submitted by St. Francis Primary Cospicua - Malta : The Forest Team  for 7-10
dissemination(s): school media, website
filed under Articles

At our school we try to do our best to instill in our students awareness for a better environment. As we believe that the implementation of actions of good practices are a benefit for them to learn how we can protect our trees and our environment so to combat deforestation. By means of the sowing of seeds activity, we enhanced the students’ awareness about the environmental and social importance of forest. For this reason we try to contribute to CO2 emissions and we want to reduce CO2 emissions. Thus we needed to implement educational activities which we need to make some changes in the way we live. We believe that these changes are important to be done together as a community as we are sure that small changes make big differences and thus result in great achievements.

Hemm modi differenti kif tmur id-Dwejra imma l-isbaħ fosthom billi tmur bil-mixi madwar il-kosta billi titlaq mil-Għadira ta’ San Raflu.
