Air pollution is a problem for all of us and so every person should take responsibility and act wisely. It is not only affecting the environment but also our own health. It is evident that Malta has a car problem, whereby car population has grown to over half the size of its human population.

A number of buckets and other materials were left behind after a day of work. Some people tend to leave things in the environment in order to keep their homes tidy. Thus, making the environment less green.

Everyone can make an effort to reduce amount of waste thrown away. One can notice that most of the items wasted on the road are organic items. These could have been added to the soil to be of a nutritional value to it. Moreover, in view of the fact that, plastic takes longer to degenerate, it should have been recycled instead.

Waste is not managed properly and in this case the sofa could have been renovated and reused in a proper living room. A lot of people tend to put garbage bags next to skips instead of inside them, thus making it easier for animals to tear them off and take materials out of them. As a result, the surrounding environment will get soiled and all of the material can eventually be carried away.

On the way to school, I have found this bone which has been there on the pavement for weeks. Somebody was really irresponsible by disposing of it near Tarxien Primary and Middle schools. This bone could be the source of a serious infection for young children coming to school or waiting for the school transport. Moreover, nobody cared to report this illegality to the authorities. Action was taken by informing the local council and the Cleansing Directorate to clean the area and by posting the photo on online media to make further pressure. This action proved successful as the bone was removed over the weekend. As a young reporter for the environment, I have also suggested the installation of CCTV cameras outside school premises to serve as a deterrent and curb illegal dumping.

Borage, stinging nettles and fennel are just a few from a wide variety of edible wild plants in the Maltese Islands. Traditionally these wild plants used to form the basis of culinary dishes and medicinal remedies. Unfortunately, nowadays such plants are simply considered as weeds mainly because of the hectic lifestyle most people lead. With just a little bit of imagination and research one can start making use of nature’s free healthy food resources.

Marine pollution including oil spills and waste dumped illegally into the sea is certainly a death sentence to marine creatures. More enforcement is needed possibly increasing fines to stop irresponsible people from doing these acts. Moreover, through educational campaigns, we will be safeguarding our seas for future generations.

This image makes us reflect how we are really caring for the marine environment. Oil and fuel spills are certainly a threat to marine biodiversity. Boat owners should be more responsible by doing regular maintenance work on their vessels and dispose of used oil safely.

Tourists visiting Malta would certainly leave our islands with a bitter taste after seeing this litter being dumped by irresponsible people into the sea. Such litter takes years to decompose and marine creatures such as turtles could easily mistake plastic bags for jelly fish. Moreover this plastic debris is also a trap to these creatures. More enforcement is needed and higher fines should certainly be imposed.
