Once in the ocean, plastic decomposes very slowly, breaking down into tiny pieces known as micro plastics. Fish eat these micro plastics and consequently we eat the fish, ending up with plastic in our body.

Walking on sandy beaches could be so relaxing and beautiful. But when a beach is ruined by trash, it can have a negative impact on the visitors’ psychological well-being and level of relaxation.

One of the most common uses of plastic in our world today is disposable straws. Although plastic straws can be recycled, their small size makes them easily missed in the recycling process. If the disposable straw is not recycled properly, it can find its way back into our environment where it poses many threats. There is a simple switch we can all make, reusable straws. Reusable straws can help reduce the amount of plastic we leave behind, making our world a better place.

During a clean-up event, students found a chocolate bar wrapper that was 5 years old, which meant it had been thrown some 260 weeks ago. Disturbingly, the wrapper looked no more than a few days old. Packaging wrappers could potentially last hundreds, thousands or even millions of years without decomposing.

LITTERally no BUTTS about it Last Thursday, together with some members from the EkoSkola committee and the Pupil’s Council committee, we carried out a cigarette butt clean up in the vicinities of our school in Luqa. We also identified places where there was a considerable amount of cigarette butts since we are planning to install ashtrays in these target areas to reduce the amount of litter in our locality. We picked up so many cigarette butts that the bag started to stink. We found a considerable amount of cigarette butts in front of the church and close to the war memorial in St Andrew’s Street. People need to stop smoking as they are harming the environment. Smoking also damages their health. Some people get lung cancer or suffer from Emphysema which is one of the diseases you can get. If you have someone at home who smokes try to encourage

Nurdles, the name of the, not so sweet, as it might sound, raw material of the plastic industry. The building blocks for plastic bottles, plastic bags and drinking straws – in fact almost anything made up from plastic. However, nurdles are also covering our beaches. It is estimated that 73% of beach litter is plastic. Ingestion of plastic kills more than 1,000,000 marine creatures each year, while humans end up eating thousands of microplastics through the consumption of seafood. Studies by the European Union and the University of Malta show that only ⅓ of the plastic used in Malta is being recycled. Most of the remaining ⅔ end up in the sea. So, let’s get over the hurdle and do away with the nurdle!
