In Paola, a block of apartments was built next to a reservoir. Every time it rains, the lower levels of the building are flooded as rain water seeps through the rocks. A water pump is used to pump out water directly into the street, creating a hazard for passing cars and pedestrians. This waste of rain water could have been prevented with some planning before the building was made. The nearby outlets of the reservoir could have been cleaned and connected to the building’s waterworks system for water provision of the block of apartments.

Landa żebgħa, lasta biex tħawwad…pinzell jonqos! Iż-żebgħa hija tossika u tagħmel ħafna ħsara lill-ħamrija u lill-pjanti. Il-ħadid jissaddad u l-plastik idum ħafna biex jitmermer. Barraminhekk, iż-żewġ materjali jagħmlu ħsara lill-ambjent. Għalhekk importanti li ma narmux barra!

The more we consume the more we have become self-centred. Tossing unwanted items in the countryside seem like second nature to many people. Improper disposal of unwanted objects isn’t just an eyesore but it poses a serious threat to nature. When are we going to realise that what goes around comes around? Saving the planet is saving ourselves.

A normal photo of the typical Maltese countryside; rubble walls and greener. The first thing that captures attention is the beautiful scenery. Yet human beings are destroying all this in the name of development. The number of empty houses is not even counted. Perhaps a tax on them will help push people to renovate them rather than build new ones on pristine land stealing our rightful heritage straight from Mother Nature right from under our noses? Let’s all become more aware of the importance of preserving the countryside.
