Kontu tafu li aħna wieħed mill-pajjiżi Ewropej li niġġeneraw ammont mhux ħażin ta’ skart? Kull persuna awtomatikament tiġġenera ammont ta’ skart kukjum. Dan l-iskart jintbagħad il-‘landfill’ li din dejjem qed tiżdied. Dan ma jfissirx li mhux qed jiġu implimentati programmi għat-tnaqqis tal-iskart, anzi f’dawn l-aħħar snin il-pajjiż tagħna għamel ħafna kambjanet għall-aħjar f’dan il-qasam. Aħna t-tfal konxji ħafna ta’ dan u ġewwa l-iskola tagħna naħdmu flimkien sabiex dan l-ammont li aħna niġġeneraw nippruvaw innaqsuh. Flimkien matul is-sena nimplimentaw diversi attivitajiet li bihom nkunu nistgħu nagħmlu dan. Dan isir flmkien bħala komunita’ tal-iskola kif ukoll magħna ijipparteċipaw ukoll il-ġenituri tagħna, u xi nies oħra tal-lokal. Dan nagħmluh għaliex dak li nitgħallmu aħna nippruvaw ngħadduh lil ħaddieħor f’azzjonijiet prattiċi ta’ kuljum sabiex inħarsu dejjem aktar l-ambjent ta’ madwarna.

Earth Hour

As part of the Earth Hour initiative, at Qormi San Ġorġ we switched off the lights for one hour and took part in several activities. We gathered together in the playground to create the shape of Earth and the words ‘Earth Hour’ using cloth, cones and students. Five loggerhead turtles-Rosy, Ricardo, Spartacus, Kiko and Bizu were released last November from the Blue Flag beach of Paradise Bay Hotel at Ċirkewwa. These marine turtles were found injured in our sea after swallowing fishing hooks, nylon and fishing lines. They were given the necessary medical treatment for several weeks. A key solution to protect these creatures is by educating the younger generation. We have to keep our sea clean from waste especially plastic bags because every year a number of turtles die suffocated by mistaking plastic bags for jellyfish. With our help, these marine species can live longer in cleaner seas.

This video, accompanied by the epic music of Howard Shore (best known for the music of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’), relates both the positive and negative sides of nature. It begins with nature at its best, then suddenly illustrates the work of a certain ‘newcomer’. This is the litter and pollution that we all know too well. The video mentions that the ‘newcomer’ is us humans who contribute to pollution. After seeing both the positive and the negative, we are faced with the instructions to return the environment to its original and beautiful state.

So, they took to the streets of Gzira and asked the people what they think about the pollution in the area and most importantly how this is directly effecting their health.

In Malta wood is used to make balconies, doors, boats and sheds. Salvu the carpenter explained in an interview that wood can be restored to its original state by first scratching off the paint, treating the wood with chemicals to get rid of any termites and then polishing the wood again. By restoring wood people will be helping the economy, the environment and saving old Maltese furniture. The main advantage today is that wood restoration can be done much faster today that it was done in the past.

At our school we try to do our best to instill in our students awareness for a better environment. As we believe that the implementation of actions of good practices are a benefit for them to learn how we can protect our trees and our environment so to combat deforestation. By means of the sowing of seeds activity, we enhanced the students’ awareness about the environmental and social importance of forest. For this reason we try to contribute to CO2 emissions and we want to reduce CO2 emissions. Thus we needed to implement educational activities which by means we need to make some changes in the way we live. We believe that these changes are important to be done together as a community as we are sure that small changes make big differences and thus result in great achievements.
