The EkoSkola group of Maria Regina College Mosta regenerated the out-of-bounds school garden which is now being opened regularly during breaks, lessons and various activities. The garden was given a facelift, new hedges planted and lots of seating areas, decorations, bird feeding stations, cat shelters etc were created using recycled material. The scope was that of making the garden more welcoming, but also to create awareness about the importance of Reusing waste since there is a huge problem of litter generation and disposal in the Maltese Islands.

In this photo one can see a channel for irrigation water which needs to be cleared up of debris. The old rusty water tank at the entrance to the fields is creating visual pollution as well as water pollution. If this channel is cleared up anyone can take a picturesque photo!

In our country maybe more than others water is an invaluable resource and more needs to be done to encourage people to collect water in the most effective way possible. So why do we shoot ourselves in the foot by not maintaining the drainage system already in place? Apart from being an eyesore it defeats the whole purpose of the system.

We pride ourselves in having organised homes and pleasant surroundings. Why does this not include public places which are ours as much as our own private homes? Our home is not defined by the boundaries of our house.

Recently, strong winds hit the Maltese islands and the rough sea unveiled ample litter floating in Cospicua Dock. The floating litter consisted of trash and household toxic substances that are improperly disposed of on land or in water. Water cans, plastic bottles and cups as well as oil cans, spray metal bottles, ropes and other forms of litter have been seen floating at Cospicua Dock. This constitutes an eye sore for passers-by along the Cospicua Dock promenade. Litter which ends up in the sea can travel long distances owing to strong currents and winds. It can directly affect marine life and birds, get caught in fishing nets, damage boat motors and smells bad. Furthermore, plastic bags and plastic wrap can easily be swallowed by fish and birds and suffocate them. After contacting the Cospicua Local Council, the necessary steps were taken to clean up the litter at Cospicua Dock.

How should burnt oil be thrown away? Can we recycle it? These are the questions that our students asked and researched after noticing the amount of oil that is thrown away. The research involved internet research, vox pops, an online survey, interviews to WasteServ and an interview to the Mayor of the locality. Towards the end of the video the students created a short tutorial on how oil should be disposed of correctly.

If the environment was karma, we would be in a bigger mess than this. Let’s prevent an apocalyptic future by littering less and protecting the environment.
