Wrigley

The Wrigley Litter Less Campaign was launched as a pilot project during the scholastic year 2011-2012 in Canada, France, Germany, Montenegro and Romania.  During the scholastic year 2012-2013, the campaign was extended to 5 more countries – FYR Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Slovakia and Malta.  In Malta this campaign was amalgamated with the YRE programme.

During the scholastic year 2013 – 2014, the last 5 countries were added to the list of participating countries, namely Turkey, Portugal, New Zealand, Italy and Israel.  A big welcome to the new participants!

Aim

The campaign aims to promote and facilitate long-term behavioural change among young people from around the world with regard to environment and sustainability.

General background and rationale

The YRE Programme is another Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme supported by Nature Trust (Malta), whereby students explore environmental and sustainable development issues across the curricula. Secondary, post-secondary and university students carry out journalistic investigations about an environmental issue and then report it to the local community via their preferred media (local press, radio, web, television, conference, exhibitions, social media, or a combination of these).

Young reporters may collaborate with other students from other countries through the YRE connect, YRE Facebook page and by commenting/interacting under reports uploaded to the YRE website, the Litter Less website and the YouTube channel. The best articles, photographs and video clips compete for the International YRE Awards.

Wrigley Litter Less Campaign methodology:

Students should design and lead a litter less campaign that would

a)    Raise awareness of the effect of litter on the local community and the environment and the need to reduce it.

b)           Document and produce a report about their litter less campaign.

c)    Disseminate their work broadly through social and other media (such as newspapers, radio, TV, school media, facebook, you tube, etc).

d)    Produce a culminating activity that illustrates the learning outcomes of the campaign. This could involve at least one of the following (number of entries is unlimited) :

i.    an article (1,000 words max);

ii.   a photograph with a short description (150 words max)

iii.a photographic essay (of up to 12 images) with a short description (150 words max); and/or

iv.a video clip (max 3 minutes).

A number of YRE workshops will be held throughout the year. Experts (photographers, videographers and journalists) will address students and give them tips on how to produce journalistic entries.

Throughout the process, the YRE student or student groups should inform the coordinator of their planned investigations. Once the work is completed, it should be published and/or disseminated  through the media. Entries should focus not only on the issue investigated, but also on possible solutions.

A National YRE Jury will select the best local submissions within the Litter Less Campaign for articles, photographs and videos in each of the three age categories 11-14; 15-18 and 19-21. The winners will be announced in a national press release and will receive the following prizes:-

i      Best overall entries: Smartphones and cash prizes sponsored by Litter Less Campaign.

ii       Participate in a mission abroad (international winners).

iii     The best campaign that focuses on preventing the generation of litter will also be a awarded a full kit of camping equipment sponsored by WasteServ Malta.  WasteServ Malta Ltd

An International YRE Jury will select overall winners from amongst the national winners of the Litter Less Campaign. The international winners will be announced through a press release. International winners will be sent abroad on a mission (in 2014 – 2015).
