GCSS Ekoskola students prepared a short video to raise awareness about the harmful practice of double-bagging grocery items. Our students carried out research online about the dangers that single-use plastics pose to our environment and to our planet. After they went to a local greengrocer armed with their mobile phones and asked for some items at the deli counter, educating the server in the process about the wastefulness fo double-bagging shop items. This video was then edited using Movie Maker 10.

A 3-minute video will be filmed from the Form 2 media students where the video will portray a room filled with litter and waste, where teachers and students will be working in such an environment and how this environment will affect them. This is our school’s video (Our Lady Immaculate School Hamrun) to raise awareness on plastic pollution. This video forms part of our Litterless Campaign. The video is part of a large campaign that our students embarked to educate students and the wider community on the importance of reducing plastic use. The idea of this video is to show that now the problem is real and that we cannot just talk about the problem but we must act.

An awareness campaign to teach students, parents and teachers about Hazardous Waste Prevention. Examples of alternative natural products instead of chemicals, were promoted. Students reached parents to raise awareness in their homes and then to reach the outer community by also implementing actions at school and outside the school. Throughout the EWWR week we decided to go ‘HAZARDOUS FREE’. We made household cleaning products by using safe and degradable ingredients and used them together at school to show to all students and teachers that there is always a safer way for this. We also went to an old peoples home, talk about hazardous waste, distributed leaflets and explained why we are using our products. This activity is being done to show that hazardous waste is very harmful for our environment and for our health, and how we can avoid it by using safe products as it is very essential

Where should we dispose of expired medicines? Should we throw them in the bin or down the drain? This video by Luke Polidano and Luke Zerafa (Yr 10 St. Augustine College, Pieta’) was produced as part of the 2018 Litter Less Campaign. It aims to raise awareness about the safe disposal of unwanted medicines.

The school’s EkoSkola Committee are taking part in the WasteServ School-Community Link Project – Promoting a Zero Waste Society in which through this and two other video in collaboration with the Video Production House Striped Sox, we are promoting the reduction of food waste and how to avoid it. This by creating awareness and also, giving tips and solutions on this. The EkoSkola team also worked g on the We Eat Responsibly Project with this same theme of food waste which is being tackled via the production of a recipe booklet Sustainable Cooking including tips and ideas to preserve food and avoid wasting it as well as recipes of leftover food.
