Four fifth formers decided to clean up the area near their old school, the Tarxien Middle school on a public holiday. They were always concerned by the rubbish that was accumulating in the area, as residents treat it like a dumping zone. The students had taken part in a clean up around Santa Lucija in November, with the Eko Skola group and this spurred them to take action and not just complain!

School committee together with SMT are aware of throwing away used unwanted good clothes & shoes. Sometimes this is done because of the modern society, the need arises to change clothes and style or because we just can’t wear them anymore. Students said that this is generating unnecessary waste as this is being disposed of in their house bins, and they know that clothing can be a large contributor to the destruction of the environment. Therefore, we decided to bring to school, children’s and adults’ used clothes and shoes, which could be easily recycled and reused, given to other children who are less fortunate and to donation centers to have a second life. The aim behind this activity is to learn from a young age how to reduce waste on our throw away culture by recycling and reusing.

This picture shows a piece of land which is full of beautiful life, full of natural beauty whereas plastic is unnatural, made by humans and yet, according to the CRI, Container Recycling Institute, 22 billion plastic bottles are thrown away every year. The bottle on the right has soil inside and so this bottle has trapped a chance at an amazing flower, tree or plant. That is what plastic does, it stops all life from growing. Plastic bottles are reusable too, but some people just decide to throw them on the floor. People are the ones to blame, not plastic as plastic is recyclable.
