“Due to our limited land mass, more high-rise buildings will be constructed in the future.” – Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market. The Real Estate in Malta is booming, and our views have changed into a surreal landscape. Everywhere you look you see apartments, planning authority sites, road construction, and the list goes on. What is happening to the limited amount of green areas we have in Malta? Is the construction more important than the greenery which gives off oxygen essential for us to live? Is it really that important? Meanwhile us students are trying to save what is left using one break at a time, planting one crop at a time….

The more we consume the more we have become self-centred. Tossing unwanted items in the countryside seem like second nature to many people. Improper disposal of unwanted objects isn’t just an eyesore but it poses a serious threat to nature. When are we going to realise that what goes around comes around? Saving the planet is saving ourselves.

Who said science is for boys? Exposing students to all subjects to achieve gender equality. Students are seen carrying out an experiment to understand how and why Carbon Dioxide (C02) leads to an increase in global temperature. The school took part in the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) program with the project ‘Understanding Urban Heat Islands’.

A normal photo of the typical Maltese countryside; rubble walls and greener. The first thing that captures attention is the beautiful scenery. Yet human beings are destroying all this in the name of development. The number of empty houses is not even counted. Perhaps a tax on them will help push people to renovate them rather than build new ones on pristine land stealing our rightful heritage straight from Mother Nature right from under our noses? Let’s all become more aware of the importance of preserving the countryside.

EcoSchools committee members planted various crops at school of which potatoes, rucola and carrots. Since not much soil is available on the school grounds seeds were sown in plastic cans and containers. In so doing unwanted material was re-used thus reducing landfill waste. Moreover, through this practice the students highlighted the importance of consuming local products as much as possible in order to keep one’s carbon and water footprint to a minimum.

Climate Change is happening and it’s affecting the whole world, from the tropics to the poles. Taking a whole school approach the students at Gozo College Middle School learned how humans are contributing to climate change and how one can take action to solve this problem. A Fun Walk was organised to raise awareness on climate change and encouraged action focused on a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mainly Climate Action, Clean Water and Sanitation.

Students at Gozo College Middle School carried out a litter survey during a Nature Walk in one of Gozo’s valleys. The students teamed up in groups and recorded litter found along the valley. Over 30kgs of litter was collected and thanks to their effort the freshwater course was cleaned. The students are putting into action their motto, ‘Never too little to care and do our share’, and the look on their faces says it all!!

Sadly, the sight of a squashed hedgehog is a familiar one. Road signs warning drivers to look out for these spiny creatures have been put up but more need to be added in some areas. Drivers need to pay carefully attention especially when using country roads. As clearly stated by a member of the Hedgehog Preservation Society in Britain, “Hedgehogs don’t have much of a flight defence. They just curl up and wait for the danger to go away but if the danger is a car, their prickles are no defence.”

Plastics are inexpensive and long-lasting, and as a result levels of plastic production by humans are high. However, the chemical structure of most plastics makes them resistant to many natural processes of degradation meaning they take long to degrade, if ever. Together, these two factors have led to an excessive amount of plastic pollution in the environment. All of this stirred in the students an urge to bring single use plastic to a halt. In an effort to reduce the adverse effects of plastic in the natural environment the students came up with their Be Drastic Cut Plastic Campaign. Through their campaign they are now encouraging people to reduce their use of plastic bags – by giving out mesh bags.
