Malta is said to be one of the countries with the highest proportion of built-up land area (33%) and one of the countries with the lowest forest land area (5%) amongst all the countries of the European Union. This comes as no surprise as it is clearly evident from the massive increase in the number of new buildings. Even though there are over 70,000 vacant households, contractors still choose to build new buildings since they will make more profit by doing this. Additionally, the number of permits being released every year is on its way up and several permits for buildings to be developed in Outside Development Zones (ODZs) have also been released. This is while these precious areas are supposed to be protected. Several valleys have been destroyed because of this, and much wildlife has become endangered or extinct.

As geography option students we prepared an action plan for this year 2015 was chosen by the EU Commission as ‘The Year for Development’. We focused on the issue of waste and the need to promote Fair Trade so as to lessen the inequality that exists between farmers in LEDCs and those in MEDCs. We did so by sending a series of emails to key persons at school, to the owner of the company hiring the coffee vending machine at school and to EU officials working at MEUSAC, the European Commission Representation in Malta and the European Parliament – Information Office in Malta. We hope that through our project more people will start drinking fair trade coffee for equality!

The birds in the dark cage prefer to be all in the wild. They are wondering what it would be like if they are free to move freely. Bird’s place is in the open. No bird is born to live in a cage. But still millions of birds are kept caged and often improperly cared for.

Cigarettes butts (discarded filters) are the most common litter worldwide. These are mostly littered on the ground. The problem is that it takes 10 to 15 years for the filter fibres to break down by the ultraviolet rays from the sun and during this time their toxic materials like chemicals and heavy metals are released. They are difficult to clean up and also such process is costly. Cigarettes butts are poisonous to living organisms when ingested like fish and children. Another problem is that if the cigarette is still lit and tossed in a bush, the bush will probably catch fire. There are many precautions that can prevent these problems like portable ashtrays or ashtray stands near a bus stop or public places. Harsher fines can be given to people who litter cigarette waste outside

The orange tree is boasting about her beauty in the garden, showing her beauty. Every year lots of trees get destroyed for human use, or by catching fire because of wrong doing. Every year a lot of trees are cut down to provide raw materials to produce paper and other things. Trees should be more conserved and protected.

Cigarette filter found in a garden. This cigarette was thrown away in the garden. Cigarette filters should be thrown in a proper bin after smoking. Certainly not the right place where cigarettes are disposed. Tons of cigarette butts and cigarette related litter is dropped every day also from car drivers while driving that throw cigarette litter on the road. A lot of other animals in the wild are killed or injured by cigarette butts.
