Its name says it all. This photo was taken in Qormi in a residential area in an abandoned field between houses. I feel sad when I see a scene like this. These days everyone knows the local coucil removes bulk litter and so I feel appalled and there is no excuse for disgracing this otherwise lovely field. I hope that with my photo I can bring awareness to others so that environmental sins like this one are corrected once and for all.

People sometimes forget that our custodial workers work very hard to keep our towns free from trash. Our local councils have worked very hard to invest in "Bring in Sites". I am angry and sad at the same time when I see nice areas with trash for no reason. The photo was taken in Qormi in an abandoned field. I wish that people would start to think before dumping their trash.

Is there light at the end of the channel?

The supply of water in Malta depends on that obtained by the Reverse Osmosis plants and the supply of groundwater. However, the level of groundwater is decreasing rapidly and over a period of time, we might have to find other alternatives. One such alternative is to build reservoirs all through Malta to hold the rain that falls. This winter was one of the wettest in the history of meteorology. The surface runoff flowing in this sort of channel is blocked by the debris of construction waste and rocks. If some of that runoff water would have been spared in reservoirs, people would turn to this supply of water (as it’s free), than open the tap and use water coming from desalinisation plants.

Countryside or dumping site?

Nowadays it is not easy to find time to go for a walk in the middle of Mother Nature because our lives are so fast and we prefer our TV sets instead of Mother Nature but what is the reason behind this choice? It may be that we feel safer in front of the TV sets or places far from nature because there are people that transformed parts of our country side into dumping sites. During a walk that I did few days ago in the limits of Mtarfa, I found from beer cans to car tires, from chairs to truck parts and those places where I found these items are certainly not where they should be. About all this the Mtarfa Local council was contacted and since this world is everyone world we should recycle what is recyclable and take care of our world together!

Fl-istaġun tax-xitwa mhux l-ewwel darba li naraw xi nixxiegħa tal-ilma speċjalment fejn hemm it-tafal. Fejn imur dan l-ilma? Ħafna drabi l-ilma jibqa’ għaddej qalb l-għelieqi għal ġol-widien. Il-bdiewa jagħmlu użu minn dan l-ilma billi jagħmlu ilqugħ u jaħżnuh f’xi ġibjun. B’hekk il-bdiewa ikollhom l-ilma biex ikabbru l-prodotti agrikoli anke fil-ġranet sħan u xotti tas-sajf. Kemm hi mportanti dik in-nixxiegħa biex ikollna ħaxix u frott frisk is-sena kollha!

Il-ġmiel ta’ pajjiżna ma jonqos qatt speċjalment f’dawk il-postijiet l-inqas affetwati mill-bnedmin. F’dan ir-ritratt naraw parti mill-irdumijiet li jinstabu madwar il-kosta Maltija. Anke jekk dan l-ambjent jidher pjuttost għeri, fih insibu pjanti rari bħal Widnet il-Baħar li ftit li xejn narawhom f’ambjenti oħra. Anke għasafar bħal Merill ibejjet f’dan l-ambjent. Ta’ spiss naraw turisti, kif ukoll Maltin jagħmlu xi passigata qrib dawn il-postijiet. Għalhekk għandna nibzgħu għall-irdumijiet billi ma nħammguhomx jew jingħataw permessi għal barrieri fil-qrib.

This sign has been lying on the sea bed in St. George’s Bay, Birzebbugia, for the past two weeks. No one did actually care to retrieve it. According to the Local Council, since the object is in contact with sea water, it is the Malta Maritime Authority which is responsible. So calling the Maritime Authority, I was told that since it is a traffic sign, I had to contact the Roads Department instead. Having done so, I was forwarded to a gentleman, who patiently, explained that since it is a temporary road sign, he will contact the private contractor entrusted with the works near St George's Bay in order to recover the sign. The sign remains an eyesore, and apart from that everyone should be conscious nowadays of the effects of chemical, physical and biological variations in the sea water environment by the corrosion rates of metals.

In Mosta lies what was once the most quaint and prosperous of all the Maltese Valleys: Wied il-Għasel. This valley, as the name implies, was famous for bee-keeping. Species which once charmed this valley like the Sicilian Spider Orchid, can no longer be seen. Although the Mosta Local Council claims that they organize various campaigns to clean the valley, a survey in Mosta revealed that astonishingly 65% of the residents did not know anything about Wied il-Għasel of which 25% did not know it even exists. What was even more impressive was the amount of rubbish found in the valley, with more than 100 different items recorded and even off roading is practised!(Matsec Environmental Project Analysis 2011) Action must be taken to safeguard the valley; rubbish should be cleaned, off roading should not be allowed and more information should be given about Wied il-Ghasel. Let’s help the environment!

This picture shows the beast – an abandoned cement mixer, alongside the pure beauty of Mother Nature. Notice how the green meadow with the lovely red flowers is ruined with the rusty deteriorated metal mixer simply as a result of the selfishness of a few people. This is so irresponsible! There is a hazard to people with young kids who come here for a breath of fresh air and to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of Mother Nature. Let us all act responsibly, take action by informing our local councils of such eyesores and inform people of the bulky refuse collection that is done free of charge by our local councils. Besides, there are the civic amenity sites that will also offer help as required, so that we dispose of all our recyclable rubbish no matter its size!

National Winning Photo 4th – A Breathtaking View?

See this breathtaking view of the beach of Għajn Tuffieħa to the left? See how the view is ruined by the eyesore of the abandoned building built next to it? There are many of these buildings scattered around Malta. Sometimes massive plots of land which were bought and built are abandoned due to various reasons. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: empty buildings which remain there for countless years. These half-finished buildings are many times vandalised and are very unappealing to the eye.
