The rubble wall makes a huge part of the Maltese culture and the rural environment. It is a pity that in some areas, its efficiency is not appreciated enough. In this picture, the rubble wall has been replaced by the building of bricks to speed up work. The craft of building rubble walls is done by choosing rocks of different size and shape, which are then placed gently with caution and precision on top of each other. This is very beneficial to the environment due to the fact that it stops the wind from spoiling the crops but at the same time it lets air pass through to the soil. It also serves as a habitat to various small animals, such as the Maltese wall lizard. Why are we avoiding the use of the traditional method to let in new methods which are such an eyesore?

Earlier this year, the Ekoskola committee, who is focusing on healthy eating as part of this year’s aims for St. Monica School Gżira, decided to create an appendix to determine what the eating choices for the students include, and how these could be improved to help, both to improve the general health of the students and to modify the menu to include more environmentally friendly options. Two students, one of them being myself, paid a visit to the school’s tuck shop to find out what exactly we were eating.

The children of our generation wish for many expensive things, and obviously, families and friends wish for the child to be happy, so toy manufacturers and tech companies work even harder for their products to be sold. But, have we ever wondered what the less-unfortunate want for Christmas? We have always thought that this is a situation in Third World countries, in fact, only 1 of 3 children know that there are less unfortunate people in our small island, Malta.

We should all do our good share to keep the environment clean and help it in every way possible, by picking up litter, by promoting ways not to pollute and much more. We should all do our share without boasting, as Blaise Pascal cleverly quotes: ‘The noble deeds that are concealed are most esteemed’.

“Your conscience is the measure of honesty of your selfishness. Listen to it carefully.” It is a common temptation for one to vandalise the environment by getting rid of whatever he needs to throw away anywhere he deems is comfortable for him. Our conscience however should help us to be aware of our bad doings and rethink our actions to avoid harming the environment around us.

Halt Bad Habits

Halt Bad Habits Trying to absorb the beauty of the view but then… Why are we spoiling our environment with litter and garbage? Also, this photo clearly shows that apart from the garbage bag being thrown deliberately in the countryside road, the person concerned did not separate the waste, since orange peel and plastic can be seen in the same bag. This attitude is a lack of respect towards our environment and each other. These bad habits are leading to the depletion of our world.

‘How can the world evolve without successful businesses or factories?’ some might ask. However, do we ever stop to realise how much this urban view can make us feel sad or stressed? Research proves that looking at nature brings humans closer together; resulting in happiness, whereas looking at urban landscapes makes us want solitude; leading to sadness. This is why it is very important to look after the environment. But how is this possible with all these buildings and constructions going on endlessly? And how can we listen to the silent cry of the animals dying because of our selfish actions?

The Students’ Council of St Margaret College, Verdala, made the environment one of its priorities this year. In fact they’ve been the main driving force behind the school’s eTwinning project ‘My Footprint Counts’ and have collaborated with schools in Poland, Portugal and Georgia to raise awareness of the Carbon Footprint of our daily choices. The aim was that the school ends the year with a better awareness of the environmental impact of everyday actions, because it was felt many teenagers don’t really appreciate their environmental responsibility.
