It has become a common sight to see immigrants working as waste collectors, with building contractors and similar. Jobs which are normally considered as involving hard work or are not so desireable. Why is this so? Immigrants are not people of a lesser status. The question is, are these people at least being employed as required by law? Or are they unregistered and being given less then the minimum wage or have longer working hours?

All living things need some place to live. Unfortunately people produce a lot of waste and it can end up effecting the natural environment. In this case, this flushing dumped carelessly in Wied l-Infern, limits of Żebbuġ is an eyesore to all the hikers and drivers passing by. It’s true that small animals such as mice, rats or snakes and even insects can use this flushing as a shelter yet it will always remain an eyesore and it will stay there for years on end unless it is removed. Yet, it is worth noting that there is even worse and highly damaging litter, such as car batteries and other old or broken home appliances carelessly disposed of in abandoned fields or valleys. Humans must not be careless and should do there best to preserve the natural environment.

What is a water pump doing in the countryside, dumped carelessly outside a field? This pump could have been easily disposed of at the civic amenity site instead of actually dumped in the open air. Just imagine the metal pump growing roots stretching beneath and on top of the soil. This pump is just a representative of all the other dumped rubbish found in the countryside. One must consider the fact that it takes an extremely long time for this metal to deteriorate one day. People must not be careless and preserve the environment by making abiding by the 3Rs all the way.

Aħna ngħixu f’dinja miżgħuda b’diversita’, fejn il-karattru, l-apparenza, it-talenti u l-personalitajiet jagħmluna unċi mill-kumplament ta’ madwarna. Playing boules is a daily appointment for a good number of pensioners with lots of free time on their hands. It is important to encourage old people to go out of their homes, meet other people, engage in activities and be pro-active. Having something to look forward to helps old people stay fit and healthy. Also, they can still give a lot to the community without having to work hard and enjoying themselves on the way.

Though limited mobility this old man stills makes it a point to go out for a walk and take out his dog as well. Unfortunately, too many people, young, middle-aged and old, even though fully mobile, do not bother to go out for walk and take a breath of fresh air preferring to sit for hours in front of TVs, computers and other games. A walk every day is worth every second.

The issue of immigration is much discussed nowadays. Everyone says his or her say. What we know for sure is that being an immigrant is not always easy. In fact many encounter racist attacks and insults. Immigrants carry with them a certain aura of mystery and curiosity. Breaking the barriers and getting to know an immigrant up, close and personal reveals a very noble act which surely leaves a mark in one’s heart and attitudes.

People in Malta are enjoying a high standard of living. This is resulting in buying more things than actually needed and then throwing them away at the first opportunity. This is resulting in the waste of resources.

Gozo is known as the place where time stands still… narrow winding streets, alley ways, old ladies knitting or lacing and even with the key dangling in the door locks. Unfortunately, even the bad habit of spoiling the natural beauty of the island seems to be part of an old culture. Or is it? Why keep on disposing of unwanted belongings in the countryside? It was certainly no choice of this car, trapped in a back to the future machine.

The Maltese countryside is rich with a variety of landscapes containing various endemic species of flora and fauna. The eyes have a lot to feast on. Considering the size of the islands in one walk one gets to see the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, stunning cliffs, sandy beaches, vegetated hills and unfortunately more then one heap of trash dumped unceremoniously in the heart of the countryside. Time goes by and still this powerful urge to spoil the natural environment hasn’t been controlled.
