We wrote this article to spread the word about the worrying data we collected about the local Junk Mail situation during our Litter-Less research. We managed to enroll 9 families in our school community and they agreed to keep the junk mail they received over a period of two months. We then weighed that mail and calculated the amount the families would have collected over a year. We also estimated how much junk mail would have been collected if we had to multiply the results to the number of dwellings in Malta. Moreover we estimated the number of trees that would have to be cut down to create all that paper that will end up as Junk Mail. The results we obtained were mind blowing and all this after the massive ‘Sort it out’ campaign. Are we really sorting it out?

The article was written after we attended one of the turtle release events organized by Nature trust. I describe the story behind the turtles in question and how our irresponsible behavior cause terrible injures to these turtles who had to pass through a period of rehabilitation before getting released back into the wild. The injuries caused were due to our fishing practices and waste dumped. It was a very emotional experience for all of us.

The image shown in the photo was built with all the waste that we found during a beach clean up, including the two dolls in the middle. This shows our love and addition for the plastic and other waste that is surrounding and suffocating us without us even realizing it.

This photo was taken on a sandy beach during a clean up event. This pile of discarded fishing gear can kill a lot of sea creatures since they get tangled in them or swallow them and die. No one is responsible for these nets since they do not have a known owner and are call Ghost nets with cause what is known as Ghost fishing.

This photo was taken during one of the Turtle release events we attending to during this year. The event was followed by a clean up session on the beach where we found this pile of lost fishing nets. This lump of dangerous material causes damage to all sort of living sea creatures and this photo shows how invasive our behavior is. It contrasts with the beautiful natural landscape of the place.

This photo was taken during one of the Turtle release events we attending to during this year. Three sea turtles were released after a period of rehabilitation they had to pass through due to injures we humans caused with our fishing practices and dumped waste. It was a very emotional experience for all of us. In this photo, the turtle is like taking a photo for us to keep as a momento of the occasion. On the other hand it also shows our invasion of the turtle territory where even during its release we had to interfere in some way or another. In fact we noticed that the turtle had to change its course towards the sea since it was suspicious of the strange object.
